Celebrating Lent for Life
If you know me, you know that I love celebrating holidays from many faiths that I feel help me become a better person, a more Christlike person.
I’m not Jewish, but I love celebrating Hanukkah, because I love celebrating the miracle of the oil and concentrating on rededicating myself to the Lord.
I also love celebrating the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, the Days of Awe and Yom Kippur. I love having the time to reflect on what I want to change in my life, what I want to repent of, who I need to forgive and ask forgiveness from.
I don’t simply save all my changing and repenting for these holiday times, but I love how we can use these holidays to help us remember and realign with what is the most important.
And that is why I’m talking to you about Lent today. While it’s celebrated by much of the Christian world, it’s not really practiced in my religion. I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And I love learning about other people’s religions, and I love the concept of Lent. I love the concept of taking 40 days and laser focusing on a good thing that we want to bring into our lives or a bad habit we want to get out of our lives so we can become more Christlike.
By the way, if you are like me and really don’t know much about Lent, it happens for the 40 days before Easter.
Here are some of my favorite clips explaining what Lent is and how to use it to help become more Christlike.

Father Mike (a Catholic Priest) - Picking a Thing For Lent
I love researching and so I found an article published by my church on Lent, what it is and how it can help people be more Christlike.
Lent is a tradition celebrated by some Christians around the world. It’s a period of spiritual humility and growth starting six weeks before Easter where believers prepare themselves for the holiday through personal sacrifice. This includes special days of fasting and almsgiving. During Lent, believers are also encouraged to abstain from something physical—like a favorite food, game, TV show, or hobby—and dedicate the extra time that would have been spent on that thing to spiritual study and prayer.
I love the idea that Easter can be a transformative experience between the Savior and me. As Latter-day Saints, we don’t practice Lent, but learning about it has made me want to give more of my time to remembering and preparing spiritually for Easter, whether through fasting, studying more of the Savior’s life in the scriptures, or even doing family history work or indexing to help me remember how much the Savior’s sacrifice means to me and to all my ancestors. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/liahona/2021/03/digital-only/learning-about-christian-traditions-made-easter-more-meaningful-to-me?lang=eng
So, with all that, I decided that for me, Lent is about taking the 40 days leading up to Easter to work on my relationship with my Heavenly Father, and to work on becoming a more Christlike Person.
Here’s some thoughts on how to accomplish that during Lent.
Becoming More Like the Savior
First, to become more like the Savior, we need to know what he was like and what he taught. I love reading about the teachings of Christ that you can find in the New Testament in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and in The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Christ in the book of 3rd Nephi. But as much I love reading scriptures I also think I’m a very visual and auditory learner. So for those who are like me, here are some media resources you can check out to learn more about the Savior and his teachings.
The Chosen. This is a series about the Savior. Our family loves it and most people who I know who have watched it love it too. To me it brings the teaching of Jesus to life. You can watch all the episodes thus far produced on BYU-TV or on The Chosen app. https://www.byutv.org/thechosen
Watching The Chosen
Season 1 has 8 episodes
Season 2 has 8 episodes
And then there is a Christmas episode
The series The Chosen does take some creative license. If you prefer simply videos that hold much more true to the scriptures I love this series produced by my church. There are
Nativity 8 videos
Miracles 12 videos
Teachings 41 videos
Final days 16 videos
I also love the Dramatized New Testament audio tapes done by The Living Scriptures.
As we are heading into Easter and contemplating the life and atonement of Jesus Christ, it might be worthwhile to check out the Easter Playlist on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ YouTube Channel. There are 40 videos. The amount of videos perfectly coincides with watching one a day and is great for reminding us about Christ and that through his atonement and with his help we have the power to change.
Lastly as we head into the Savior’s last week before Easter studying what he did and taught on those last days could help us connect with Christ more. Here is a simple way to understand his last days. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/new-era/2015/04/the-saviors-last-week?lang=eng
Oh, and when it comes to learning about the Savior few things are better than going to church. So naturally you’ll want to go to church during Lent. If you want to check out a service of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints there are churches all over the world and I’m sure you can find one near you. Just click this link and enter your address to find a church near you. FYI - meeting houses are just another name for church and wards are just another name for congregations. Just enter your address zip code on the link. All are welcome to attend. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/maps/meetinghouses/@0.000000,0.000000,2
If you’d like to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before or after attending you can click here to chat online or to have some representatives of the church come and visit you and answer any questions you may have. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist
Now, don’t worry, I know Lent is not all about learning about the Savior, it’s also about becoming like him. So some may want to pick just one thing to focus on during lent. They say it takes 40 days to establish any new habit, so Lent is the perfect time to develop a new habit or get rid of an old habit that helps us be more Christlike. How do we decide what to focus on? We ask our Heavenly Father in prayer. This is one of my favorite talks that teaches us how to connect with God and the importance of simply following what we hear him respond.
If you like reading instead of listening to things or if you like reading along with talks you can get the transcript of the talk here https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2015/10/what-lack-i-yet?lang=eng
Some, during Lent, instead of focusing on one trait or habit, might want to do many Christlike acts of service. For that I don’t know of anything better than picking one of the Light the World calendars below and simply completing each idea - or letting the idea on the calendar spark your own ideas of service and doing them.

As we are talking about focusing more on Christ and becoming Christlike, be sure you are incorporating music into your gameplan. Think about picking a song for Lent or making a playlist to help you remind you of your goals for Lent.
And don’t forget the power that essential oils can bring. Perhaps you want to get some Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils and experience some of the benefits of those. Perhaps you want some essential oils and tools in your Lent toolkit for when you need some Motivation to keep going on your Lent goals or some consolation or forgiveness when the times you fall short. Here’s a link to my doTERRA essential oil store. I’ll put on some things I think might be helpful to use during Lent, but feel free to shop around and create the order you like best. Or reach out to me and I can help you put your custom kit together. https://doterra.me/NBgmSxOB
If you already love essential oils and are wise in their use, share your thoughts on essential oils you would incorporate for what during Lent.
By the way, if you love essential oils, music therapy and positive affirmations check out my podcast. You can catch them here. https://podcast.livingthewholesomelife.com/
Okay, we’ve talked about learning about Christ, and we’ve talked putting what we learn about the teaching of Christ into action. And we’ve talked about using music and essential oils to help us along our Lent journey. Share with me your ideas about how to make the most of Lent. Together I know we can make this the best Lent ever. And by “The best Lent ever” I mean, as the first talk says, not giving up or doing something only for the 40 days of Lent, but making life long changes to become better people.
